The Chinese Turkestan is a region that has a predominant Muslim population for centuries, but not much was known about Muslims in this region and other parts of China till recently.With the Communist country, at last, opening its doors to outsiders and journalists rushing to Tibet and Xinjiang, new facets of Chinese life are emerging.The photographs of the streets of the Western region of Xinjiang surprised me. Like the picture on the left (above) that shows Arabic alphabets.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which controls 16 federal agencies that make up the US intelligence community, is engaged in a technological revolution of sorts.  On at least one technological front, the office on Tuesday broke out an RSS feed on its flashy, newly designed public web site. The site is complete with a new scary message from Director Mike McConnell. The message scrolls along the top of the page like the text at the beginning of a "Star Wars" flick. Last Friday, the devastating Cyclone Nargis struck Burma (Myanmar) killing 22,000 with a further 40,000 people reported missing. With the death toll rising rapidly, urgent action is needed to relieve the catastrophe. Many survivors have been left homeless and wandering in search of food, clean drinking water and shelter.

You don’t need to look at the “energetic activities of the Mossad in Iraq” to find the reason George Bush has slaughtered 20,000 Moslem Iraqi men, women and children. All you need to do is remember Bush saying that the war is “a crusade” and bombs falling - “shock and awe” on Iraqi homes. When will you understand that Bush’s Christian ambitions include the destruction of Islam? When he kills 50,000 of you? 500,000? Five million? In case you didn’t know, Bush is developing 500 new nuclear warheads per year and guess who he’s going to drop them on? England? You may not want to believe that this is a religious war, but it is. And who do you think is funding Mossad?

What becomes immediately apparent upon reading the Arabic text (but once again obscured in the translation) is that two very different words have been used to convey the idea of happiness: فَرِحِينَ fariheena, which is conjugated from the noun فَرَح farah, and سُرُور suroor, and this is prevalent throughout the Qur’an. This is because there are two very different types of happiness being referred to.
